Christmas holidays were great, I was in Mexico City with Leif and his family. Mexico City is an interesting city, with old history and beautiful buildings. Between Christmas and New Years we went to Tepoztlan, a really wonderful little town 1½ hours outside of Mexico City where Leif's grandparents have a house.

We spent 4 days in Tepoztlan, climbing the mountains to the Tepozteco pyramid, strolling around the town and just enjoying the everlasting spring (weather was wonderful!).

We were back in Mexico City for New Years Eve. Unknowing of what the new year would bring, we spent it at Leif's cousins' house, drinking wine, champagne and Aalborg Akvavit (!). We were supposed to do some more sightseeing in the city before flying back to Cancun 4.1, but things happened..
I woke up 1.1.2012 with nausea (which i in the beginning thought was because of mixing some alcohols the previous night) but soon I realized it was more than just a hangover. My body ached everywhere, and I started to get fever. The next day my fever just kept on increasing, reaching over 39 degrees (probably more, I stuffed myself with paracetamol and fell finally asleep so I don't know) and at the same time I got diarrhea and really bad stomach ache and burn. I went to the doctor the next day, got antibiotics and I was feeling a bit better. The next day we flew to Cancun as planned, but that was as far as we got. My condition got much worse, and I was in and out of the hospital during the night, and in the morning I was so bad they took me in for the next 4½ days getting IV and drugs drugs drugs. I'm very very grateful to Leif, who stayed with me at the hospital, keeping me company (even tho I wasn't much of company, being so sick) and not leaving me alone because I was shit scared.

| Last day at hospital, already with energy to sit up, read, talk and walk (a tiny bit). AmeriMed Hospital was like a 5 star hotel, I just had to ring the bell everytime I needed something and the nurses were wonderful, always treating me with a smile on their face. After talking to the doctors in Finland, they said the would have treated me exactly the same way as they did in Cancun. |
My brother and his girlfriend arrived to Cancun the day before I got out of hospital. We were supposed to go together to Belize, dive the Blue Hole and take a sailing tour of 3 days. Unfortunately, I had to stay behind in Akumal and rest, while they went to Belize. Leif decided to stay with me which was wonderful, but I felt really bad that he didn't get to go to Belize.
After 10 days of resting in Akumal, Niku and Karin came back from Belize and it was time for us to fly to Cuba while Leif had to fly back home to Illinois. Karin had got an ear infection on the trip, and Niku an eye infection and flue. So when I stopped with my medicines, it was time for them to start..

Cuba was a wonderful surprise, beautiful, warm, with lovely people and a really good vibe. Niku had to rest the first days, and me and Karin walked around Old Havanna and Central Havanna. Dad came to Cuba the day after us.

We lived the whole Cuba trip in Casa Particulares, which are private homes offering rooms for rent. This was a great way to get to know Cubans, and my Spanish improved a lot talking with these wonderful people. We spent a couple of days in Habana, and then we took a really cool taxi to Viñales, which is a UNESCO Culture Heritage site.

In Viñales, Niku was still sick, so the rest of us went for a horseback riding tour in the valley. I told the guide that I was a veterinarian, and I wanted to see the horses before we went riding. I think they found us the healthiest horses they had, because they looked ok (though 2 were a bit skinny, but not too bad) and we saw another group and their horses were in much worse shape than ours. It was very nice to go riding, and we laughed a lot because this was one of the first times riding for both Karin and my dad and the horses did exactly what they wanted without listening to them :)

After a day in Viñales we decided to rent a car and go to María la Gorda for diving. It would have been nice to stay in Viñales for a couple of more days, but we had a tight timetable, and off we went. 174km took us 3½ hours, because of the awful condition of the roads. But it was nice, and we saw a lot of the countryside.

It was nice to come to the beach, so different from Yucatan! No people, no hotels, just an empty beach and crystal clear water!! We managed to punctuate one of the car tires, but luckily we had an extra one (which actually held all the way back to Viñales the next afternoon). We went for 2 dives the next morning, and the coral formations were incredible! The reef was definitely in better condition than the one in Yucatan, and visibility was almost 30m.

After the diving I felt a little bit weird, very hot and tired. We left María la Gorda, and on the way back to Viñales I started to feel sick again. But I thought it was only carsickness. However, back in the town I got a new stomach disease, and also dad and Hanna got it. So off we went this tiny little clinic, and they gave me some IV for 6h because of me having had such a bad infection only 2 weeks earlier. I felt already better the next morning, but had still fever and I had to start on a new antibiotic AGAIN.
We went back to Havanna, and then we flew back to Cancun (dad and Hanna via Guatemala back to Finland). Niku and Karin had to fly back to Finland as well. I spent the first day in Cancun at the hospital, taking new tests.. Everything seemed to be all right, but my insurance company (and me and the rest of the family) agreed on flying me back to Finland for a month of resting the stomach before I continue my trip. I was supposed to go to Guatemala for a Spanish school, but this has to wait now for a while. So after a couple of days in Akumal, I had a flight back home. So here I am, having some doctors appointments to make sure everything is how it's supposed to be. And actually it's quite nice to be home and be taken care of. Next week I plan to go visit my friends in Copenhagen :)
And this is how it looks like (50 degrees celcius less):
